Shirakawa's One-Plank Bridge
A stone single-plank bridge over the Shirakawa in Higashiyama, properly Furukawachō Bridge and also called the Gyōja or Ajari Bridge. The present crossing dates from a 1907 rebuilding: granite, about 12 meters long and barely 67 centimeters wide. During the "Kyoto great circuit" of Mount Hiei's thousand-day kaihōgyō—the stage before completion—white-robed ascetics are said to cross it, and that is said to be the source of its name.
