Yasaka Shrine, Heart of the Gion Festival
The head of all Gion shrines nationwide and the heart of the Gion Festival. Its Ekijinja sub-shrine preserves the tale of Somin Shorai, a poor man said to have sheltered a wandering god and been granted lasting protection from plague, and is known for its chinowa ring-passing rite.
