Former Ogura-ike (Ogura Pond)
旧・巨椋池(おぐらいけ)
◈
This area once lay on the northern edge of Ogura-ike, a vast lake some 4 km across and 16 km around, covering about 800 hectares. Set at the lowest point of the Kyoto basin where the Katsura, Uji and Kizu rivers met, it was prized for fishing and moon-viewing—until Hideyoshi's building of Fushimi Castle (1594) cut it off from the Uji River, and in 1941 it vanished under Japan's first state-run land-reclamation project.
