Makishima Castle Site
槇島城跡
◈
The castle where Ashikaga Yoshiaki took up arms against Oda Nobunaga and withstood a siege in 1573 (Genki 4). His withdrawal is held to have brought the Muromachi shogunate to its effective end. Its stone walls are said to have been repurposed for the Makishima embankment during the Uji River works that accompanied the building of Fushimi Castle, and today only a stele in Makishima Park and a few others remain.
