Ukishima Thirteen-Storied Stone Pagoda
浮島十三重塔(うきしまじゅうさんじゅうのとう)
Said to have been raised in 1286 by the monk Eison of Saidai-ji on a sandbar in the Uji River, this stone pagoda stands about fifteen meters — among the largest surviving pre-modern stone pagodas in Japan (an Important Cultural Property). It is held to admonish the taking of life in the river, built over buried fishing gear as a memorial (with a legendary cast). Toppled and submerged in the flood of 1756, it was re-erected in 1908 after some hundred and fifty years.
