Agata-jinja Shrine
縣神社(あがたじんじゃ)
The shrine enshrines Konohanasakuya-hime. Its Agata Festival, held in the dead of night on June 5 with every light put out, sends a bonten palanquin through the darkness — a rite of the dark night counted among Uji's foremost festivals. Some hold it was made guardian shrine of Byodo-in (tradition; accounts vary), and the name “Agata” already appears in the Kagero Nikki, by some accounts an old shrine that predates Byodo-in.
