Statue of Kuya Shonin (Rokuharamitsu-ji)

六波羅蜜寺 空也上人像

East (Rakutō)|祇園・東山

A Kamakura-period statue (Important Cultural Property) of Kūya, the Heian monk who carried the nembutsu into the streets, carved by Kōshō, a son of Unkei. Six tiny Amida Buddhas issue from his open mouth — the six syllables of "Namu Amida Butsu" made visible.
