Koyaku Alley's Masakado Legend

A narrow, crooked alley from Shijō to Ayanokōji. The monk Kūya is said to have consoled the severed head of Taira no Masakado here (accounts vary); "Kūya's memorial rite" slurred over time into "kōyaku," the plaster that lends the lane its name. A small shrine to Masakado still stands down the passage.
