Koyaku Alley's Masakado Legend
A narrow, crooked alley from Shijo to Ayanokoji. The monk Kuya is said to have consoled the severed head of the rebel Taira no Masakado here (accounts vary); the memorial rite held for him, kuya-kuyo, is said to have slurred over time into koyaku, the word for plaster that now names the lane. A small shrine to Masakado still stands down the passage.
