Shumoku-no-zushi (alley)
Shumoku-no-zushi is a through-passage lane between Nishikikōji and Shijō, west of the Muromachi line. Its name comes from the way a branch cutting west toward Shinmachi forms a T, likened to a shumoku, the T-shaped mallet used to strike a temple gong. Properly Kannondō-higashi-zushi, it also appears on Edo-period maps as "Kannon-no-zushi," with the name Shumoku coming into parallel use later.
