Burial site of Chosokabe Morichika's head (Renko-ji)

長宗我部盛親公埋首地(蓮光寺)

Central (Rakuchū)|五条

Chosokabe Morichika, a lord of Tosa who fought for the Toyotomi side as one of the Five Warriors of Osaka Castle, was beheaded at Rokujo-gawara in 1615, at the age of 41. The priest of Renko-ji, with whom he had ties, is said to have asked for his head and given it burial; a stone before the gate marks where his head was interred. Asked at his capture why he had not taken his own life, he is said to have answered that a commander should not die lightly—that given the chance, he would raise his banner again and wipe away the shame.
