Ebisugawa-dori (furniture district)
Just why furniture makers gathered along Ebisugawa-dōri is not certain; one account supposes it arose of its own accord. It's said that when the Hamaguri Gate Incident of 1864 burned the quarter from the Imperial Palace through Nakagyō, this neighborhood recovered early and drew woodworkers to the rebuilding. In the prosperity of the Taishō years, shops for furniture and interior fittings multiplied, and in 1926 the merchants formed the Ebisukai, later the Ebisugawakai, advertising widely that "Ebisugawa is the town of furniture." Workshops keeping the joinery of Kyō-sashimono, fitted without nails, still stand along the street.
