The Well to the Underworld (Rokudō Chinnō-ji)
冥土通いの井戸
☾
A Rinzai temple of the Kenninji school at Rokudō-no-tsuji, long held to be the boundary between this world and the next. In the garden behind the main hall remains the well said to have been used by Ono no Takamura, who by day served the imperial court and, so the legend goes, by night the court of Enma, king of the dead. At Bon, the toll of the "welcoming bell" is believed to reach the underworld.
