Yasaka Shrine's Shijo Otabisho

From the Shinkosai, when the shrine's three mikoshi depart for the Otabisho, to the Kankosai, when they return, the portable shrines of Yasaka Shrine rest at the Shijo Otabisho on Teramachi. It's said that during these seven days a wish will be granted to anyone who comes each night in complete silence — a practice known as mugon-mairi, the "silent pilgrimage." By tradition it is kept above all by the geiko and maiko of Gion, who visit without a word. The otabisho was consolidated here on Toyotomi Hideyoshi's order in 1591 and took its present form after Shijo Street was widened in 1912.
