Yasaka Shrine's Shijo Otabisho
From the Shinkō-sai to the Kankō-sai, the three portable shrines of Yasaka Shrine rest at the Shijō Otabisho on Teramachi. It's said that during these seven days a wish will be granted to anyone who comes each night in complete silence—a practice known as mugon-mairi, the "silent pilgrimage." By tradition it is kept above all by the geiko and maiko of Gion, who visit without a word. The otabisho was consolidated here on Toyotomi Hideyoshi's order in 1591 and took its present form after Shijō Street was widened in 1912.
