Nishiki Tenman-gu, Market Shrine
This Tenman-gū at the east end of Nishiki Market enshrines Sugawara no Michizane. Its stone torii is an odd sight: both ends of the top beam disappear straight into the buildings on either side. The gate is said to date from 1935, and by one account—unconfirmed in primary sources—a later rebuilding of the blocks failed to allow for the width of the crossbeam, so rather than remove the sacred gate the walls were cut around it (accounts vary). A noted spring, the "Nishiki water," rises in the grounds.
