Sanjokai Shopping Street
Sanjōkai Shopping Street opened in 1914 with 72 shops between Aburanokōji and Ōmiya, and through the Taishō and early Shōwa years it reached west toward Senbon. Its arcade, running some 800 meters along Sanjō-dōri between Horikawa and Senbon, is counted among the longest in western Japan. Midway along the street stands the Matatabisha, also called the Gokusha, an outlying shrine of Yasaka. By tradition it traces to the Goryō-e held at Shinsen-en in 869 to quiet an epidemic, and during the Gion Festival's return procession an offering rite is still kept there.
