Uji's Giant Thirteen-Storey Pagoda

Said to have been raised in 1286 by the monk Eison of Saidai-ji on a sandbar in the Uji River, this stone pagoda stands about fifteen meters — among the largest surviving stone pagodas from before the Edo period in Japan (an Important Cultural Property). It is held to admonish the taking of life in the river, built over buried fishing gear as a memorial (with a legendary cast). Toppled and submerged in the flood of 1756, it was re-erected in 1908 after some hundred and fifty years.
