Etched Sorrow·Rakunan / Makishima
Makishima Castle and the Last Shogun
In 1573, Ashikaga Yoshiaki, a shogun, held this castle against the forces of Oda Nobunaga, his powerful rival; Yoshiaki's withdrawal effectively brought his family's centuries-old shogunate to an end. The castle walls are said to have been reused in a river embankment, leaving only stone markers where a government fell.
