Mirokuin Temple (Shiawase Jizo)
弥勒院(幸せ地蔵尊)
☀
A small Shugendo temple under Shogoin, tracing its origins to Chosen-ji, founded in the Tenna era (1681-84). In the Edo period it led the rite of 'Fuji-gori' -- worshipping Mt. Fuji from Kyoto's riversides for those who could not make the climb. Moved beside the Philosopher's Path in 1927, its hall keeps the Shiawase ('happiness') Jizo, an Edo-period statue cradling an infant said to have come from a Muromachi merchant house in wartime, still believed to invite happiness.
