Okame's Tragic Carpenter Legend
Its main hall, built in 1227 and spared by the Ōnin War's fires, is the oldest building in central Kyoto (National Treasure). By temple lore, when the master carpenter cut a pillar too short, his wife Okame saved him with a clever fix — then took her own life before the ridge-raising, lest it shame him to be known he owed the work to a woman's counsel.
