Shakuzo-ji (Kuginuki Jizo)

A temple said to have been founded in 819 by Kobo Daishi (Kukai). The well he is said to have dug himself, Kajisui, still flows-said to be one of the three Kobo Daishi wells. Its Jizo draws out human suffering ('kunuki'), a name that shifted to 'Kuginuki Jizo' (nail-pulling Jizo); votive plaques bearing pincers and eight-inch nails blanket the hall in astonishing numbers.
