Birthplace of Japan's Electric Railway

電気鉄道事業発祥地

Central (Rakuchū)|京都駅周辺

In February 1895, the Kyoto Electric Railway ran Japan's first commercial electric streetcar from this spot — a revival project for a city drained by the capital's move to Tokyo, powered by the hydroelectricity of the Lake Biwa Canal. The monument marks the line's starting point.
