Recorded Joy·Rakuchū / Kyoto Station

Japan's First Electric Railway

In February 1895, the Kyoto Electric Railway ran Japan's first commercial electric streetcar from this spot — a revival project for a city drained by the capital's move to Tokyo, powered by the hydroelectricity of the Lake Biwa Canal. The monument was erected to mark the line's 80th anniversary.
