Site of the Rajomon Gate

羅城門跡

Central (Rakuchū)|京都駅周辺

The main southern gate of Heian-kyō, at the foot of Suzaku avenue. Built in 794, toppled twice by storms and never rebuilt after 980. Known as the setting evoked by Akutagawa's "Rashōmon," it survives now only as a stone marker in a children's park.
