Birthplace of Ito Jakuchu

伊藤若冲 生家跡(青物問屋 枡屋)

Central (Rakuchū)|四条

In 1716, the painter Ito Jakuchu—later famous for his teeming roosters and plants—was born here at Masuya (also called Masugen), a greengrocer's wholesale house on Nishikikoji. The family dealt in vegetables, and Jakuchu himself ran the shop until he handed it to his younger brother at the age of forty. A small panel at the western mouth of Nishiki Market marks where his birthplace stood.
