Saba-kaido terminus (Demachi Masugata arcade)

鯖街道口(出町桝形商店街)

Central (Rakuchū)|出町柳

The end point of the Saba-kaido, the 'Mackerel Road' that carried fish from Wakasa on the Japan Sea to Kyoto. Lightly salted at the coast, the mackerel is said to have ripened to just the right taste by the time it reached the city; a stone marker stands at the west foot of Demachi Bridge.
