Hanjo-jinja (Shrine of Lady Hanjo)

繁昌神社(班女ノ社)

Central (Rakuchū)|四条烏丸

A rare shrine whose very name speaks of prosperity in trade—"Hanjo" said to be a corruption of Hanjo-no-yashiro, the Shrine of Lady Hanjo. In its inner sanctuary stands Hanjozuka, a mound tied to an old tale in the Uji Shui Monogatari of a daughter whose body kept returning to the living until it was laid to rest here.
