Higashi-Sanjo-dono Palace Site
The site of Higashi-Sanjo-dono, a grand mansion of the Fujiwara regents in the Heian period. The main residence of Kaneie, it was where his daughter Senshi bore Emperor Ichijo and, taking the tonsure, became Higashi-Sanjo-in, the first-ever nyoin (imperial lady). A model of shinden-zukuri architecture, it welcomed emperors with dragon-prowed boats on its garden pond.
