Birthplace of Tenjin Worship
This Tenman-gū in Shimogyō calls itself the birthplace of Tenjin worship. By tradition, in 942 an oracle came to Tajihi no Ayako—said to have been the wet nurse of Sugawara no Michizane—bidding her enshrine him at the Ukon riding grounds in Kitano; she first enshrined him in a small shrine in her own garden. When Kitano Tenman-gū was founded in 947, this shrine is said to have been its forerunner. In 2024 its main hall and other structures were designated by the city as buildings forming a historic landscape.
