Birthplace of Tenjin Worship

By tradition, the former nurse of Sugawara no Michizane, the scholar revered as Tenjin, received an oracle in 942 and first enshrined him in a tiny shrine in her garden. That private garden shrine is said to have become the forerunner of a major Tenjin sanctuary founded five years later.
