A spot deep in an alley where Shimada Kai, a corporal of the Shinsengumi, is said to have lived after surviving the Battle of Hakodate and returning to Kyoto. A towering veteran of great strength who held a master's license in Shingyōtō-ryū swordsmanship, he later served as a night watchman at Nishi Hongan-ji and lived until 1900.
