Home of a Shinsengumi Survivor

Shimada Kai, a veteran of the Shinsengumi, the shogunate's swordsmen police, is said to have lived deep in this alley after surviving the Battle of Hakodate. Once renowned for his towering build and strength, he ended his working life as a temple night watchman and lived until 1900.
