Otani Hombyo, Shinran's Mausoleum
It began as the grave of Shinran; by tradition his youngest daughter, Kakushinni, built a hexagonal mausoleum north of Yoshimizu and enshrined his image there. In 1603 it is said to have been moved by shogunal order to its present site on Gojō-zaka. Known as the "West Ōtani" to distinguish it from the Higashi Ōtani of the Ōtani-ha, this hall belongs to the Hongwanji-ha. To this day it receives, alongside Shinran's remains, the ashes of the faithful from across the country.
