Senryomatsu Battlefield, 1868
Senryōmatsu names a stretch of the Yodo embankment where the Battle of Toba-Fushimi was fiercely fought in 1868. On the fifth day of the first month, the former shogunate forces, having withdrawn from Fushimi, took position on the narrow embankment and engaged the new government army, led chiefly by Satsuma and Chōshū, but were beaten back by volleys of modern firearms. Retainers of Aizu and Kuwana, members of the Shinsengumi, and troops of the Kyoto Shoshidai patrol fell here; Inoue Genzaburō, captain of the Shinsengumi's sixth unit, is said to have died on this ground. A monument to the eastern army's war dead stands on the site, with their burial ground on the same plot.
