Hitokui Jizo (Sutoku-in Jizo)

A Jizo enshrining Emperor Sutoku, who died embittered in exile to Sanuki after losing the Hogen Rebellion of 1156, a succession struggle at the imperial court. Its formal name, Sutoku-in, is said to have slid over time into 'Hitokui'—'man-eating' (tradition). In 1899, it is said, it was moved here, to the Junteido of Shakuzen-in, when the Kyoto Imperial University hospital was built over its former ground.
