Site of Sanjo-Higashi-dono
三條東殿遺址(さんじょうひがしどのいし)
A late-Heian imperial residence, one of the palaces held since Retired Emperor Shirakawa. In 1159, Fujiwara no Nobuyori and Minamoto no Yoshitomo raided and burned the residence of Retired Emperor Go-Shirakawa here — the Night Attack on the Sanjo Palace that opened the Heiji Rebellion. A city marker (official no. NA035, erected 1966) records the site.
