Goryo-jinja, where the Onin War began

応仁の乱勃発地・御霊神社

Central (Rakuchū)|西陣

In early 1467, this grove saw the clash between Hatakeyama Masanaga and Yoshinari — the "Goryō skirmish" that opened the ten-year Ōnin War. The conflagration that burned much of Kyoto began here. The shrine was founded to pacify the vengeful spirits of the wrongfully dead.
