Site of Ryoma's Assassination

Sakamoto Ryoma and Nakaoka Shintaro, two figures caught in Japan's political transformation, were assassinated here at the Omiya soy-sauce shop. Their deaths marked a turning point in the Meiji Restoration, the fall of military rule, while today a stone stands amid Kawaramachi's busy shopping streets.
