神泉苑

Central (Rakuchū)|二条城前

An ancient garden pond where, in 824, Kukai is said to have summoned the dragon-deity Zennyo Ryuo from northern India and prevailed in a rite for rain (tradition). Its banks were also the stage for the goryo-e of 863 and the raising of sixty-six halberds in 869, held to be the origin of the Gion Festival.
