Cherished Legend·Rakuchū / Demachiyanagi
Tanaka-jinja
East of Demachiyanagi, in what was once the village of Tanaka, this shrine to Ōkuninushi has long served as the district's tutelary deity. By tradition it was founded in the Kōan era (1278–88), and in 1628, when Shimogamo Shrine was rebuilt, it is said to have received the old hall of Shimogamo's Hiragi sub-shrine. That building burned, along with the shrine's old records, in a village fire of 1706; the rebuilt hall still bears the triple-hollyhock crest that marks its tie to Shimogamo.
