Etched Sorrow·Rakuchū / Sanjō
Site of the Ikedaya Incident
In 1864, the Shinsengumi, the shogunate's swordsmen police, raided activists seeking imperial rule here. The clash is said by some to have hastened Japan's return to imperial government—and by others to have delayed it.
