Kamishichiken (geisha district)

上七軒(かみしちけん)

Central (Rakuchū)|上七軒

Kyoto's oldest geisha district. Its origin is traced to seven teahouses built in the Muromachi period from timber left over from rebuilding Kitano Tenman-gu; when dango dumplings were offered at Hideyoshi's Great Kitano Tea Gathering, the five-dumpling crest is said to have been born.
