Misu-jinja (Torch Festival)

三栖神社(炬火祭)

South (Rakunan)|横大路

The tutelary shrine of the old Shimo-Misu village, enshrining Emperor Tenmu among others. Its autumn Taimatsu (torch) Festival recalls how villagers welcomed Prince Oama (Emperor Tenmu) with bonfires as he passed through during the Jinshin War of 672; bearers carry a roughly one-ton torch along the Takeda highway (a Kyoto-registered intangible folk cultural property).
